TN: Private schools concerned about the increased politicization of schools.

TED NewsDesk, Chennai: The federation of private schools association on Thursday spoke against the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to declare all passes to students in classes IX to XI.

They pointed out that this move of the government to declare an all pass for the students a second time in the past two years is purely political. According to them, this move comes with a political motive to win votes for the upcoming elections.

Federation president M Arumugam, asked: “What is the need for such a hurried decision? That too, days after they announced that the Class XII board exams would be held in May. “He said this destroyed the efforts taken to conduct online classes for seven months amid several constraints faced by students, parents, and teachers, followed by reopening schools in a phased manner.”

Classes for 10th AND 12th started on January 18 and classes for the 9th and 11th began on February 8.

He added that there were negligible incidents of Covid-19 spread in schools.

This decision has put a lot of things in question; firstly the necessity to conduct classes henceforth in this academic year is also a big question. According to the Federation, the government should have waited till May and if the situation had not been conducive to conduct the exam by then, it should have been postponed by two more months till July before it was canceled. “Now it is obvious that students till Class VII will also be declared all pass, said Arumugam.

This has also posed many hurdles in the collection of the fee from the parents. Parents are unwilling to pay the fee since their children are already being declared passed. Thus, it has left many teachers without salaries and has become a big challenge for the survival of private schools.

The federation, therefore, raised their voices regarding the non-payment of the salaries of the teachers and demanded that the burden of their salaries should be taken up by the state government
