Symbiosis began in 1971 as an international cultural and educational centre founded in Pune by Dr S. B. Mujumdar. The Symbiosis Society’s website describes him as Founder and President; the pages read do not state the society’s legal registration. Its main university, Symbiosis International (Deemed University), received deemed-to-be university status from the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2002. Dr Mujumdar is its Chancellor, Dr Vidya Yeravdekar its Pro-Chancellor and Dr Ramakrishnan Raman its Vice Chancellor.

The Symbiosis Society says the group runs 70 institutions, centred on a 400-acre university campus on the outskirts of Pune, with campuses in Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Noida. It also runs the 900-bed Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Centre and the Symbiosis Medical College for Women. A Symbiosis University of Applied Sciences operates in Indore under the Symbiosis name, but its website, as read, does not describe its governance link to the society. No revenue figure was found.
