Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM) describes itself as “a Public Charitable Trust registered under the Society’s Registration Act and Bombay Public Trust Act”. Its managing committee, the supreme decision-making body, has 30 members and nine trustees, and an executive committee of 59 members is expected to meet monthly. SVKM’s office bearers page names Amrish R. Patel as Honorary President and Trustee. The Mandal traces its start to 1934, when it took over the Rashtriya Shala, a school founded in 1921.
SVKM runs schools, junior colleges and degree colleges, centred on a complex in Vile Parle, Mumbai, and its own university, SVKM’s NMIMS, a deemed-to-be university. NMIMS cites 32,000+ students, 900+ faculty, 17 specialised schools and campuses in Mumbai, Shirpur, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Indore, Navi Mumbai, Chandigarh and Sanand. SVKM’s own overview says the Mandal educates more than 35,000 students. According to Wikipedia, NMIMS was established in 1981 and became a deemed university in 2003.
