TED NewsDesk, Chennai: The Minister of School Education, Tamil Nadu, K A Sengottiyan has said that over 400 students from the government schools in the state will be getting medical college seats under the 7.5% reservation. He told reporters at Gobichettipalayam in the district that 313 students would get medical seats and 92 at dental colleges, including 55 from Erode district alone.
He also spoke about conducting public examinations for Class 10 to 12 students; he said that the state government would announce the date for the public exams by December-end. Tamil Nadu is the only state in the country to implement a 7.5% reservation, the Minister said. With the consent of Governor Banwarilal Purohit after what the opposition parties called much delay, the state government issued a GO to implement the quota regime from the current 2020-21 academic year itself.
Earlier, Sengottaiyan inaugurated a drinking water supply scheme to residents of Pariyur Nanjagoundenpalayam. District Collector C Kathiravan was also present for the occasion. The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court had earlier suggested the state government reopen schools and colleges across the state after December. Thus, on November 12, the state government revoked its earlier order to reopen the schools for Classes 9 to 12 from November 16. The government took this decision after most parents expressed their opinion against schools reopening in the state amid the pandemic.
The bench stated that in a time when even judges are getting infected due to the ongoing pandemic, the reopening of educational institutions could be pushed to after December. The court also advised the state government to come to a decision keeping in mind the situation of students in other states and the state of the pandemic within Tamil Nadu.
