UPES is a private university in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, established through the UPES Act, 2003, of the Uttarakhand State Legislature and recognised by the University Grants Commission. It says it was set up in 2003 as an energy and core sector university, and that its College of Legal Studies followed in 2007.
Programmes run through seven schools: advanced engineering, computer science, design, law, business, health sciences and technology, and liberal studies and humanities. The university states that it has more than 19,100 students, more than 1,500 faculty and staff and more than 40,000 alumni; these figures are undated. Its leadership includes a President, Dr. Ram K Sharma, and a Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sunil Rai.
