The University of Nottingham began as a civic college in the city of Nottingham in 1881 and became The University of Nottingham in 1948. Its campuses in Nottingham are University Park, Sutton Bonington, ten miles to the south, Jubilee, and King’s Meadow, which houses Manuscripts and Special Collections.

The university opened a campus at Semenyih, Malaysia, in 2000, which it describes as the first campus of a British university in Malaysia. The Malaysia campus states it has over 4,000 students from 74 countries and is led by Professor David FitzPatrick, a Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university and Provost and CEO of the Malaysia campus. In China, University of Nottingham Ningbo China says it was founded in 2004 with Ministry of Education approval as a Sino-foreign cooperative university with independent legal personality, and has nearly 10,000 enrolled students.
