The University of Manchester was founded in 1824. It is a Royal Charter corporation, under a charter awarded in 2004, and an exempt charity under the Charities Act 2011. Its academic work is organised in three faculties, each made up of schools, and its main campus is on Oxford Road in Manchester. Professor Duncan Ivison is President and Vice-Chancellor.

Its financial statements for the year to 31 July 2025 record 30,470 undergraduates, 11,410 taught postgraduates and 3,995 research postgraduates in 2024/25, excluding students taught offshore through partnerships; by domicile, 26,525 were from the UK and 19,345 were international. Total income was £1,421,861,000. The university runs four global centres, in Dubai, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore, which offer online and blended programmes, mainly MBAs. It says it has been home to 26 Nobel Prize winners.
