UC Davis opened in 1908 as the University Farm, the research and science-based instruction extension of UC Berkeley, and the University of California regents designated it a general campus in 1959. It is part of the University of California and is based in Davis. Gary S. May is its seventh chancellor.

The university reports 39,414 students, the largest student population in the University of California system, without a reference date. It has four colleges (Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Engineering, and Letters and Science) and six professional schools; the schools named on its About page cover nursing, management, education, law, medicine and veterinary medicine. It offers 107 majors and 101 graduate degrees and runs a 625-bed teaching hospital. According to the chancellor’s page, it brings in more than $1 billion a year in sponsored research.
