The University of Alberta was created by the first act of Alberta’s 1906 legislature, sponsored by Premier Alexander Cameron Rutherford, a year after Alberta became a province. Henry Marshall Tory, recruited from McGill University, was its first president from 1908 to 1928. It has five campuses in two cities: North Campus, Campus Saint-Jean (French-language), South Campus and Enterprise Square in Edmonton, and Augustana in Camrose.
The university states it has 46,201 students from 159 countries, more than 200 undergraduate and more than 500 graduate programmes, 108 Canada Research Chairs and $600 million in annual research funding in 2022-23. Bill Flanagan became its 14th president and vice-chancellor in July 2020.
