The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) is a medical institution in Bengaluru (Bangalore). Its website describes it as the apex centre for mental health and neuroscience education in India and says it operates autonomously. According to its prospectus for the INI-CET July 2025 session, the Government of India established the All India Institute of Mental Health in 1954, and NIMHANS came into existence in 1974.
The same prospectus states that the University Grants Commission conferred deemed-to-be-university status on NIMHANS in 1994, and that it was later declared an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament, with a gazette notification dated 14 September 2012. It gives the campus area as 135 acres. The pages read do not state student numbers.
