The University of Mumbai, known earlier as the University of Bombay, was established in 1857 following Wood’s Education Dispatch and is one of the first three universities in India. Its name was changed to the University of Mumbai by a Government of Maharashtra notification published in the Government Gazette on 4 September 1996.

NAAC accorded the university five-star status in 2001 and an A++ grade on 31 August 2021, and the UGC gave it Category-I status in 2023, according to its About page and the Vice-Chancellor’s profile. Its NIRF 2026 data submission reports 7,845 students in its own undergraduate, postgraduate and integrated programmes in 2024-25, plus 2,867 full-time PhD students; affiliated college students are not included. Prof. Ravindra D. Kulkarni has been Vice-Chancellor since 8 June 2023.
