Karolinska Institutet (KI) describes itself as a medical university and governmental authority, dedicated to medical education and research since 1810. Its University Board (Konsistoriet) is the highest decision-making body, and the President, Annika Östman Wernerson, is the government-appointed director general. Core activities are run by a Faculty Board and 21 departments in three departmental groups, at campuses in Solna and Flemingsberg and at hospitals in the Stockholm region.
KI’s key indicators for 2025 show 6,743 full-time equivalent students, 2,215 doctoral students, 5,675 employees (5,078 full-time equivalents) and turnover of SEK 8,650 million, with research accounting for 85 per cent of turnover. KI says it has 33 per cent of Sweden’s doctoral students in medicine and health sciences. Since 1901 the Nobel Assembly at KI has selected the recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
