Homi Bhabha National Institute is a deemed to be university under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956 and an aided institution of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), according to a DAE notice. Its registered office is in the Training School Complex, Anushaktinagar, Mumbai.
Its home page lists constituent institutions including BARC, IGCAR, RRCAT, VECC, SINP, IPR, IOP, NISER, HRI, TMC and IMSc. HBNI held its first annual convocation on 2 June 2025 at the DAE Convention Centre, Anushaktinagar, where degrees were presented to 293 graduating PhD students; the DAE notice named Dr. Anil Kakodkar as Chancellor and Prof. U. Kamachi Mudali as Vice Chancellor at that time. Its NIRF 2025 data submission reported 808 postgraduate, 824 PG-integrated and 2,371 full time PhD students for 2023-24.
