Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) was founded in 1920 in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, and is overseen by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It has further campuses in Weihai, Shandong province, and Shenzhen, Guangdong province. In 2000 it merged with Harbin University of Architecture. Its leadership page names Zhao Yan as Chair of the HIT Council and Han Jiecai as President.

HIT was included in Project 211 in 1996 and Project 985 in 1999, and was designated a Class A university under the national Double First-Class initiative in 2017. Its introduction page, dated 30 June 2026, lists 23 full-time academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering on its faculty, and nine first-level national key disciplines. HIT says it has educated nearly 400,000 high-level professionals.
