Google announces new AI research in partnership with NSF

TED NewsDesk, California: Google has announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence (AI) research institute to support human-centred AI development. It aims to boost the ongoing research and development on the interaction between people and AI. The tech giant has collaborated with the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) for the same. It will provide support worth $5million in the form of funding to the institute.

In addition to the $5 million in aid to the institute, Google announced that it will also offer “AI expertise, research collaborations and Cloud support for researchers and educators”. The National AI Research Institute for Human-AI Interaction and Collaboration is facilitating this venture.

“People also support AI systems and their decision making through training data and model design, testing and operation, and continued feedback and iteration on system performance. People and AI systems shape each other, and to realize the full potential of AI for social benefit, positive and productive human-AI interaction and collaboration is critical,” said Google in a blog post.

“Research projects will engage a diverse set of experts, educate the next generation and promote workforce development, and broaden participation from underrepresented groups and institutions across the country,” the blog post elaborated.

The tools and techniques developed by the institute will also thus be based on people-centred principles. These include social benefits, inclusive design, safety and robustness, privacy and high standards of scientific excellence. Further, all research results will be published to share knowledge and progress in the rapidly developing field.

This new institute will focus primarily on developing tools and techniques in the field of AI. These tools will adhere to humanistic principles, like social benefit, inclusive design, safety, robustness, privacy etc.

Google also announced that the outcomes of the research will be published regularly to keep the AI community at par with the progress in the field. In the past few years, the search engine is working and publishing hundreds of research papers in this field. The institute is also a part of the company’s ongoing efforts to promote innovation and technology leadership.

Google has published various research papers on the visualization and the interaction between human and computer. It acts as a bridge between the industry and academic experts at various events. In fact, during the PAIR Symposium and other research conferences, Google showcased its tools like Facets and the What-If Tool.

Google believes that Artificial Intelligence can adapt quickly to decision-making in sectors like medicine, education, agriculture, among a range of others. This institute by Google and NSF will focus on further realising the existing potential of Artificial Intelligence and its interaction with humans in other domains.
