Department for higher and technical education to establish MOASU in Ratnagiri

The Department hopes to deploy the 720-km waterfront of the state beside offering employment to regional people for work in transportation, fisheries and tourism sectors.

TED NewsDesk, Ratnagiri: On Wednesday the Department for Higher and Technical Education of Maharashtra informed about its aim to establish an educational institution based particularly on oceanic sciences. The area decided for the establishment of Maharashtra Ocean Applied Sciences University (MOASU) in Ratnagiri district in Konkan. IT hopes to deploy the 720-km waterfront of the state beside offering employment to regional people for work in transportation, fisheries and tourism sectors. The Department made a committee of four members to seek suggestions concerning the establishment of the university.

Dr Sarang Kulkarni will head the committee. Dr Kulkarni is the chief instructor at Indian Institute of Scuba Diving and Active Sports of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC). Other members include Dr Narsingh Thakur, Faculty, National Institute of Oceanography, CSIR; B. B. Chougale, Faculty, Pune College of Pharmacy; and Dhanraj Mane, Higher Education Director.

The Department gave 3months duration to the board to submit its report. Besides, it directed the committee to recommend the capital amount alongside a rough idea on the plot required to set up the institute. It also asked to focus on facilitating employment-based education and subjects apart from reflection upon the eligibility criteria for educators.

The state DHTE issued a Government Resolution (GR) outlined that the university will concentrate on sea-level studies, marine life studies, fishery studies, environmental and tourism studies.

The decision of setting up an oceanic sciences-oriented institute will help the enthusiasts to explore their interest in marine life.
