TED NewsDesk, New Delhi: The Patent Office of the Government of India granted a patent to an invention titled “High Strength Cementitious Nanocomposite Compositions and the methods of making the same”. The patent was applied for by Mr Ibadur Rahman, Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI).

Other patentees of the project are Prof. Mohammed Arif, Department of Civil Engineering and Prof. Ameer Azam, Department of Applied Physics, Z. H. College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh.

Aim of this research:

The main idea behind Mr Rahman’s project was to bring together nanotechnology and construction technology to produce nano modified cement-based materials. Additionally, it aimed to magnify mechanical performance, reduce weight, and efficient utilization of the material resources.

Various compositions with nano additives are used to make high strength cementitious composites. The influence of additive components such as nano cement, silica fume, nano-silica fume, fly ash, and they studied nano fly ash in the cement matrix concerning standard size cement matrix. With the addition of the nanoparticles, they observed a significant improvement in the properties of the cementitious matrix.

Benefits of the research:

The modified nanocomposites will be useful in strategically important structures that require high strength, like Nuclear Power Plant, Airport Runways, and Bridges. These materials will also be beneficial in constructing tall rise buildings, particularly the ‘Smart Cities’ projects of the Government of India.
