TED NewsDesk, New Delhi: With Smart Cities Mission emerging as a significant project of the Government of India (GoI), the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIITH) established a Smart City Research Center (SCRC). MEITY (GoI), Government of Telangana and Smart City Mission assisted the institute in setting up the centre.

The project envisions at transforming 100 cities within five years with a budget of Rs 100 crore for per city per year. As a part it, Living Labs is looking forward to upgrading the environmental, economic and social sectors by developing an urban space. The prevailing centres of IIITH will extend their professional skills to SCRC in different arenas. Some of these include signal processing, design of smart and automated buildings, OneM2M server, optics and photonics, embedded systems and IoT, flexible electronics, research and development in fundamental aspects of computing systems, radio frequency integrated circuit design and low-power VLSI design and so on.

“IIITH’s Living Lab will collaborate with government bodies, start-ups and big organisations on Smart City solutions. The IIITH campus would include different IoT verticals related to air quality, building energy, water quantity and quality, street lighting, etc. Through the Living Lab, IIIT-H plans to transform the campus into a platform for learning, experimentation and for showcasing new ideas and approaches,” explained Mr Ramesh Loganathan, Professor, IIITH.

He further added, “As technology goes mainstream and directly into homes, buildings, campuses and cities, it is imperative that access to such spaces should be available to ensure that the right products are defined, designed and built. Without live access to such spaces, solutions or products may end up being theoretical and not actually usable.”

The Smart City Mission is a new project of the Government of India initiated to accelerate the financial condition and transform the lives of citizens. The scheme focuses on internal development and facilitating technologies to yield smart results for the people.
