TED NewsDesk, Coimbatore: ‘SriShakhtiSat’, a satellite has been developed by the students of Sri Shakhti Institute of Technology, Coimbatore. The satellite, which costs Rs 2.5 crore, will be inaugurated by the chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Dr R Sivan on January 28.
The students took inspiration from Prime Minister Modi, who established the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre in June 2020. According to the chairman of the Institute, Dr Thangavel, the students have collaborated with ISRO and have joined forces with the Serbian Community for Space Programme Development.
Besides, the Institute became a part of the Satellite Networked Open Ground Station (SATNOGS) project.
Thangavel added that SATNAGOS’ main goal is to provide technologies for a distributed network of low-earth orbit satellite ground stations. SriShakhtiSat is as compatible as other nanosatellites that weigh as much as 10kgs, despite itself weighing as little as 460 grams.
The planned use of the satellite is to demonstrate technology for the Internet of Things in space and inter-satellite communication. Thangavel said that the satellite would be transferred to ISRO after its inauguration and will be ready for use by February.
