TED NewsDesk, Tamil Nadu: The National Medical Commission (NMC) told the Madras High Court on Thursday that there will be no addition of extra seats in 24 medical colleges in the state. It denied so on the grounds of lack of sanction from the Supreme Court. The additional seats were supposed to go to the students who come under the reservation quota of 7.5 per cent.

VP Raman, the counsel for NMC commented that the Supreme Court had said earlier as well that the state High Courts do not have the power to add extra seats in government medical colleges.

The situation arose due to several pleas submitted by the candidates who got admission in self-funded medical colleges under the reservation but their names got included in the waitlist since they were not able to pay the fees. They said that they would not be in the waitlist had the decision on the quota had come earlier.

After the NMC presented their petition, Justice Anand Venkatesh did not agree to give any judgement on the candidates in the waitlist. He added, “If such order is challenged and eventually reversed by the apex court, it would be cruel to the students.”

“We have 26 seats which can be allotted to the students,” said the Advocate-General Vijay Narayan. He added that 11 seats in MBBS have been given back to the State quota, apart from 15 seats in BDS.
