TED NewsDesk, New Delhi: The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 includes almost 1,400 universities across 92 countries, standing as the largest and most diverse university rankings ever to date. The table is based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. In the most recent edition of the rankings, Stanford University topped the charts within the Arts and Humanities stream. A total of six universities from the US featured in the top 10 list, following which were United Kingdom-based. From India, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and the University of Delhi secured featured within a list of 501.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is the only academic institution from India to feature in Times Higher Education (THE) Global Ranking. IISC received 94th position in the engineering and technology stream and secured 96th position in the computer science category. The Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking list features as many as 1,512 universities and evaluates 11 subject areas. The rankings displayed that US-based universities dominate the chart. In as many as nine subjects, US-based universities secured the top spots.

In the Business and Economics stream, Stanford University stood out from the lot as the top academic institution yet again. Out of the top 10, seven universities are from the US, and three belong to the United Kingdom. Focusing on the top Indian universities that ranked in the most recent THE Rankings, one can observe that they do not hold the top spots in large numbers.

India is currently heading towards a new era in education, and emphasising on digital learning. While it treads towards this new path and incorporates changes into the system, bridging the gap between the top-ranked universities in the world and Indian Institutes can significantly help. Infrastructure, accessibility and most importantly, a system that matches international standards is what’s much needed to see Indian universities lead the charts shortly.
