TED NewsDesk, Mumbai: Rush in the education sector has put a big question on the future of the country’s youth. In one such case, above 40000 students in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) await confirmation of their seats even after six rounds of admissions to the first-year junior college (FYJC).

On completing the first-come, first-served round on January 30, more than 1.02 lakh MMR vacancies are yet to be filled. The education department’s report states that 16% of the total eligible students have still not secured admission.

“There are students who have got admissions in ITI courses or diploma courses, and also those who stay on the border of MMR and other regions, who might have secured admission elsewhere. Names of some such students might have reflected in the portal too,” said Sandeep Sangave, deputy director of the Mumbai region.

As per the education department officials, the government is yet to notify about the extra rounds of admission.

The FCFS admission process took place in seven stages, starting from January 14 to 30. Each stage had a score bracket (90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, all passed students and ATKT students). The students had an opportunity to apply under a particular bracket as per their eligibility. By the end of 7th round, the department allotted colleges to 23,798 students. However, only 19, 753 students secured admission in various MMR colleges.

The new academic year for junior colleges in Mumbai began from January. The students are now looking forward to hearing from the education department regarding examinations.
